What is CLEP*?

CLEP*, which stands for College Level Examination Program, is one of the best kept secrets in higher education. Imagine taking a single multiple-choice exam and earning college credit for an entire course — all without spending thousands of dollars or months in a classroom!

About the CLEP Program

CLEP exams are published by the Collegeboard, who also makes the SAT exam and the AP exams taken by millions of high school students every year. CLEP was first launched in 1967 and since then, has gained widespread acceptance, with 2,900 colleges and universities awarding credit for a passing score.

What is a CLEP exam like?

The vast majority of CLEP exams are purely multiple-choice, usually consisting of around 90 to 100 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The exceptions are the Literature exams and the College Composition Modular exam, which include optional essays, and the College Composition exam which includes two mandatory essays. There are also the language exams which include a listening section in addition to multiple-choice.

There are a total of 34 subject exams covering a wide range of courses typically taken in the first or second year of college such as introductory level social sciences, history, literature, composition, math, and science courses.

TIP: For the full list of 34 CLEP exams along with descriptions, check the official CollegeBoard website. Note that InstantCert does not offer study guides for every single CLEP exam. Currently, we offer materials for 26 out of the 34 exams.
